Each person is unique. Heather works with a client’s natural interests and abilities to create an environment in which the client can thrive and heal. Whether someone has a physical disability, a mental illness, or an injury, Heather can structure a session to work with the person’s strengths and needs.
Music therapy can help with…..
mental health
boosting mood and creativity
Most of us have experienced the healing power of music. After a hard day at work we turn our favorite tunes on and let the familiar sounds and words bring us into a positive, relaxed state of mind. Neurons within the brain often fire in sync with the rhythm of the music, allowing music to be an aid for concentration and meditative states. Music can also help reduce levels of stress, depression and anxiety, while boosting creativity.
physical health
movement and relaxation
Playing music provides many opportunities to use muscles and joints that crave movement. Also, the body naturally entrains to rhythms; heart rate and breathing rate tend to sync up with the pace of the music, allowing music to assist with physical relaxation and stress relief. External movement also syncs up with rhythms, facilitating activities such as re-learning how to walk after a medical setback.
spiritual health
Connection to self and others
Participating in musical activities is an easy and fun way for both children and adults to connect with other people. Socialization is healing in and of itself, and coupled with music, it can bring joy and empowerment. For people at the end of life, music can be a means of remembering and connecting with precious moments, as well as a gateway to acceptance of the future.
